People are usually reluctant to admit their real feelings in surveys, but there’s no doubt that our experiences and our prejudices play a part in the way we vote. In order to figure out whether racial bias affected Barack Obama’s results in the 2008 presidential election, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a doctoral candidate in economics at Harvard University, passed over easy-to-manipulate surveys and looked at data from another source: online searches. read more
A West Virginia Pentecostal pastor who used poisonous snakes during religious services has died of a rattlesnake bite. Mack Wolford, who just turned 44, was killed by a snake he had owned for years, reports the Washington Post. He was bitten during an outdoor service at a state park he had hoped would be a “homecoming like the old days,” filled with people speaking in tongues, handling snakes and having a “great time,” he said on his Facebook page. “Praise the Lord and pass the rattlesnakes, brother,” he wrote last week. Ashton Kutcher ‘Brownface’ Ad With Indian Character ‘Raj’ Pulled
Popchips has answered complaints of “brownface” by agreeing to pull an ad that featured “Two and a Half Men” star Ashton Kutcher as an Indian man looking for love. Bollywood producer Raj is one of several characters featured in a series of ads for the snack company. While one featuring only Raj was pulled from Popchips’ YouTube channel, an ad featuring all the characters, including Raj, remained online as of Thursday afternoon.
Reps for Popchips and Kutcher did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.”
But Popchips founder and CEO Keith Belling wrote on the company’s website that the company “worked hard to create a light-hearted parody featuring a variety of characters that was meant to provide a few laughs. We did not intend to offend anyone. I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended.” (more…)
Gwyneth Paltrow’s N-Word Tweet Gets Thumbs-Up From Russell Simmons
Gwyneth Paltrow’s use of a racial slur on her Twitter account over the weekend angered many. But Russell Simmons wasn’t one of them. Hip-hop mogul Simmons weighed in on Paltrow’s controversial tweet via a post on Global Grind on Tuesday, and to hear him tell it, the only thing that offended him about the actress’ tweet was that he wasn’t also at the Jay-Z and Kanye West concert that Paltrow tweeted from.
“It was at this show that my friend Gwyneth Paltrow tweeted something that got me a little twisted,” Simmons wrote. “I follow Gwyneth on Twitter and when I saw her tweet about the ‘N*ggas in Paris’ show in PARIS, I said ‘Damn everybody is there but me.’ I’m a bit older and I don’t get to jet-set to concerts like I used to, but when I saw Gwyneth was there, I must admit, I got a little jealous.” (more…)
Fayette County deputies arrested megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar Jr. early Friday morning for allegedly assaulting his 15-year-old daughter. According to the police incident report, the preacher’s 19-year-old daughter, Alexandria, said Dollar “put both hands around her sister’s neck and choked her for about five seconds.” Alexandria Dollar told deputies she then saw her father grab her little sister by the shoulders and slap her in the face. She says the sister tried to break free but was thrown to the ground, at which point Alexandria ran to get her mother, Taffi, whose arrival in the kitchen ended the fight, the incident report states.
The 15-year-old, who also alleges her father beat her with his shoe while pinning her to the floor, sustained “superficial injuries” to her neck, said sheriff’s office spokesman Brent Rowan. The 50-year-old minister was charged with simple battery, family violence and cruelty to children. Deputies were summoned to Dollar’s Sandy Creek Road home around 1 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. They discovered “enough probable cause to make an arrest,” Rowan said.
According to the incident report, the 15-year-old was upset because her father wouldn’t let her attend a party on Saturday. Dollar, longtime pastor of World Changers Church International in College Park, said he was merely trying to restrain his daughter, who he claims was acting disrespectful. While holding her, she began to hit back so he wrestled her to the floor, the report states. Dollar told deputies he then spanked his daughter’s rear and sent her to her room. (more…)
Singer Erykah Badu has said she feels “disgusted” and “violated” after rock band The Flaming Lips posted a music video showing her and her sister naked. Badu recorded a song with the band, who asked the singer and her sister Nayrok to sit in a bath full of blood, glitter and creamy liquid for the video. Badu said she was not shown the edited version, which she called a “tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video”.
The band apologized after releasing the explicit video without approval.
The alternative rockers teamed up with the Grammy-winning soul singer to record a version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for their latest album. The singer said she thought the concept for the accompanying video was “disturbing” but went along with it “out of respect for you and the artist you ‘appear’ to be”. (more…)

racist south african model tries to defend her actions
FHM model Jessica Leandra dos Santos used the word “kaffir” in a tweet on May 3, summoning South Africa’s nasty history of racism and segregation. “Kaffir” is South Africa’s version of the n-word in the United States. It may even cut deeper in South Africa, however, in South Africa, because the wounds of apartheid are still fresh.
“Just, well took on a on arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have,” she tweeted. The backlash came immediately, forcing the model to delete the tweet within hours. Dos Santos later claimed that the incident inside Spar, a South African supermarket, came after she was confronted with sexual remarks. (more…)
Launching a lawsuit against the very company that is responsible for a farmer suicide every 30 minutes, 5 million farmers are now suing Monsanto for as much as 6.2 billion euros (around 7.7 billion US dollars). The reason? As with many other cases, such as the ones that led certain farming regions to be known as the ‘suicide belt’, Monsanto has been reportedly taxing the farmers to financial shambles with ridiculous royalty charges. The farmers state that Monsanto has been unfairly gathering exorbitant profits each year on a global scale from “renewal” seed harvests, which are crops planted using seed from the previous year’s harvest.
The practice of using renewal seeds dates back to ancient times, but Monsanto seeks to collect massive royalties and put an end to the practice. Why? Because Monsanto owns the very patent to the genetically modified seed, and is charging the farmers not only for the original crops, but the later harvests as well. Eventually, the royalties compound and many farmers begin to struggle with even keeping their farm afloat. It is for this reason that India slammed Monsanto with groundbreaking ‘biopiracy’ charges in an effort to stop Monsanto from ‘patenting life’. (more…)
