The Mayan calendar is a hieroglyphic laden artifact that “ends” on December 21, but experts in the ancient culture said that Mayans never meant that to mean the end of the world was coming.
Time was measured differently on the Mayan calendar than it is today, counting individual days.
“That’s somewhat different from our own calendar, which is really tied to the length of the solar year,” Walter Witschey, an archaeologist and Maya expert at Longwood University in Virginia, told LiveScience. (more…)

It’s no surprise that director Quentin Tarantino’s slavery themed revenge film “Django Unchained” is doing well at the box office. In an interview with The Root, the director reveals his plans for a new film about a regiment of black WWII soldiers seeking vengeance after being wronged by their commanding officers.
“My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f*ked over by the American military and kind of go apesht. They basically — the way Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) and the Basterds are having an ‘Apache resistance’ — [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland.”
According to Tarantino, the script is “ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it.”
“Django Unchained” has sparked controversy about Tarantino’s portrayal of slavery, and the director has long faced criticism over his character’s use of the n-word. Spike Lee, a well-known critic of Tarantino’s work, recently called Tarantino’s work “disrespectful.” Lee also wrote on Twitter, ” American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It was a Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them.”
While you were likely resting or enjoying time with friends and family over the Christmas break, the United States Food and Drug Administration was hard at work ramming through genetically modified salmon towards the final acceptance process. Despite the frankenfish actually being blocked by Congress last year over serious health and environmental concerns, the FDA is making a massive push to release the genetically modified salmon into the world as the FDA-backed biotech giant and creator of the fish AquaAdvantage screams for profits.
These fish of course threaten the very genetic integrity of the food chain when considering the fact that they will ultimately be unleashed into waters with other salmon and likely even the ocean at large. The AquaAdvantage genetically modified salmon have been engineered through genetic manipulation to grow double the size and weight of the average salmon. Hitting 24 inches instead of 13 and weighing in at 6.6 pounds instead of 2.8, the GM fish contains both a gene from another salmon known as the Pacific Chinook as well as an eel-like fish. (more…)
Chicago sued for alleged discrimination against black teachers
CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Chicago Teachers Union has sued the nation’s third largest school district, saying Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s campaign to reform or close underperforming public schools discriminates against African-American teachers and staff. The federal lawsuit filed on Wednesday and announced on Thursday is the latest battle with the city since teachers staged a week-long strike in September. It alleges that more than half of the tenured teachers fired in the most recent round of school closings and turnarounds were African American. But blacks make up less than 30 percent of the tenured teaching staff in the district and 35 percent of the tenured teacher population in the failing schools, the lawsuit claims.(more…)

Jamie Foxx isn’t shy about sharing his views on the differences between black people and white people.
The Academy Award winning actor, who was snubbed for his performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained at the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday, candidly sounded off in the December/January issue of VIBE about how everything in his life is built around race, and RadarOnline.com has all the details.
As black folks we’re always sensitive,” Foxx said. “As a black person it’s always racial. (more…)
Television personalities are encouraged to communicate with their fans on Facebook but a meteorologist in Shreveport, La. was fired for doing just that.
Rhonda Lee, the weekend weather forecaster for KTBS-TV, was fired for responding to comments left on her station’s Facebook page lambasting her appearance. She responded to a viewer’s complaint that suggested the “black lady” wear a wig to hide her cropped hair.
“im not sure if she is a cancer patient,” wrote viewer Emmitt Vascocu on Oct 1, according to Ebony. “but still its not something myself that i think looks good on tv. what about letting someone a male have waist long hair do the news. what about that.”
Lee politely responded later that day telling Vascocu that she’s the “black lady” he was referring to: read more
‘My (project) was the president being saved instead of drowning him… so I drowned his wife and the dog,’ said junior Carnal Washington. ‘I felt bad. It didn’t feel right drowning the president.
According to Washington, the student with the highest praise did more than just put the president underwater.
‘The highest grade in the class was a girl who had Obama swimming toward a bucket of chicken instead of his family. I thought that was sad, but when (the teacher) saw it, he started laughing,’ Washington told CBS Los Angeles.
