Reporting Factory Farm Abuses to be Considered “Act of Terrorism” Under New Law

How do you keep consumers in the dark about the horrors of factory farms? By making it an “act of terrorism” for anyone to investigate animal cruelty, food safety or environmental violations on the corporate-controlled farms that produce the bulk of our meat, eggs and dairy products.

And who better to write the Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act, designed to protect Big Ag and Big Energy, than the lawyers on the Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force at the corporate-funded and infamous American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

New Hampshire, Wyoming and Nebraska are the latest states to introduce Ag-Gag laws aimed at preventing employees, journalists or activists from exposing illegal or unethical practices on factory farms. Lawmakers in 10 other states introduced similar bills in 2011-2012. The laws passed in three of those states: Missouri, Iowa and Utah. But consumer and animal-welfare activists prevented the laws from passing in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York and Tennessee. (more…)

Catfishing from Manto Teo to NFL players

The NFL used to be so innocent.

Back in the day, when unknown, surgically enhanced women approached random pro football players, they were usually just prostitutes sent by Lawrence Taylor to tire rivals out before games.

Now players just don’t know who to trust.
A week after news of the Manti T’eo hoax broke, NFL.com reports some Washington Redskins players were contacted by a fan using the pseudonym “Sidney Ackerman”, as well as a photo avatar stolen from porn actress C.J. Miles (as opposed to the NBA player of the same name). full story

Scientists Restart Work on Deadly Engineered Avian Flu by Jamie Condliffe

In January 2012 scientists around the world halted research on engineered avian flu viruses over concerns that the work was too dangerous. Now, those scientists are taking to labs once more to continue their work.

What was initially a 60-day halt to research turned into a year-long battle for the scientists, who have had to lobby hard to, in their own words, “describe the measures in place to minimize possible risks, and to enable organizations and governments around the world to review their policies (for example, on biosafety, biosecurity, oversight and communication) regarding these experiments”. Those words form part of a letter signed by 40 academics, published in Nature, which states their intention to bring the moratorium to a close.more

Fake Lion: Bunny Wailer Blasts Snoop Dogg for New Rastafari Persona

Bob Marley’s former The Wailers bandmate Bunny Wailer has reportedly taken aim at rapper Snoop Dogg for posing as a member of the Rastafari movement after immersing himself in Jamaican culture last year.

The hip-hop superstar previously revealed he had been anointed Snoop Lion by a Rastafarian priest after experiencing a spiritual awakening while recording his first reggae project, “Reincarnated.” He adopted the traditional dress and dreadlocked hair during his time in Jamaica and filmed his transformation for a documentary, also titled “Reincarnated.”

But Wailer is not convinced by Snoop’s new lifestyle and he has accused the rapper of the “outright fraudulent use of (the) Rastafari community’s personalities and symbolism,” according to TMZ.

Members of the Rastafari Millennium Council have also launched a verbal attack on Snoop, demanding he refrain from using the moniker Snoop Lion and apologize for his behavior or face legal action, according to TMZ. They have also fired off a seven-page letter to the marijuana-loving star, insisting that “smoking weed and loving Bob Marley and reggae music is not what defines the Rastafari Indigenous Culture.”

DNA Bust:Appalachian people boasted of Portuguese ancestry to avoid slavery were actually descended from African men & white women

you not white in america
As Jack Nicholson said in a few good men – You cant handle the truth!

Varied and sometimes wild claims have been made about the origins of a group of dark-skinned Appalachian residents once known derisively as the Melungeons.

Some speculated they were descended from Portuguese explorers, or perhaps from Turkish slaves or Gypsies.

Now a new DNA study in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy attempts to separate truth from oral tradition and wishful thinking
The study found the truth to be somewhat less exotic: Genetic evidence shows that the families historically called Melungeons are the offspring of sub-Saharan African men and white women of northern or central European origin.

And that report, which was published in April in the peer-reviewed journal, doesn’t sit comfortably with some people who claim Melungeon ancestry.

‘There were a whole lot of people upset by this study,’ lead researcher Roberta Estes said, noting that many preferred their assumed origins.

Danny Glover Says Second Amendment Prevented Slave Revolts, Conservative Students Petition

Actor Danny Glover discussed the roots of the Second Amendment during a recent college appearance, saying the legislation was ratified to protect against slave revolts. Now, a conservative student group is launching a petition against the school’s “leftist bias.”

Glover appeared at Texas A&M on Thursday, Jan. 17 for an event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when the conversation turned to the right to bear arms, according to RawStory. Glover proceeded to discuss the Second Amendment, and how it was written to protect the institution of slavery and to help secure Native American land.

“I don’t know if you know the genesis of the right to bear arms,” Glover said. “The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts, and from uprisings by Native Americans. So, a revolt from people who were stolen from their land, or revolt from people whose land was stolen from, that’s what the genesis of the Second Amendment is.
