Chris Rock seems to have tweeted up a bit of controversy over the July 4th holiday. The comedian, whose latest project is executive producing Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell for FX, ruffled more than a few feathers after sending out this message to his followers: “Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.”

Rock is certainly no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to explorations of racism and stereotypes. One of his most controversial bits, “Niggas vs. Black People” from his 1996 special “Bring The Pain,” is also one of his most beloved, though he has backed off of performing it since. As Rock later told 60 Minutes, “By the way, I’ve never done that joke again, ever, and I probably never will. ‘Cos some people that were racist thought they had license to say nigger. So, I’m done with that routine.” (more…)

Four-time gold medalist Michael Johnson believes the question of why black athletes dominate Olympic sprint competitions shouldn’t be taboo. In the lead-up to the London Games, he’s trying to broach the controversial topic. Johnson, who recently had his lineage traced back to West Africa as part of a British documentary, told the Daily Mail that slavery has “left an imprint through the generations.”

The eight men who ran in the 100-meter finals — all African-American or African-Caribbean — in Beijing are believed to have been descended from slaves, according to the documentary. “Difficult as it was to hear,” Johnson said, “slavery has benefited descendants like me. I believe there is a superior athletic gene in us.” (more…)

Schlessinger is not actually a Doctor but in fairness she has tried to stop the usage of Dr. Laura a long time ago. Use of the title “Doctor” is a misrepresentation to some. Her claim to be a “licensed psychotherapist”, and her use of the “Dr. Laura” name while giving advice have engendered controversy. Critics contend that these titles lead her listeners to assume that she holds a doctorate in psychology, or that she is a psychiatrist and that state law in California limits the use of the “psychotherapist” term to those holding a psychotherapist license. However, she does hold a California license as a family and marriage counselor which she obtained after completing classes and training from the University of Southern California (USC), and her Ph.D in physiology qualifies her for the title of Doctor. In regard to her 2000-2001 television show, she stated in an appearance on CNN’s Larry King Live that she had requested that it be called “Schlessinger,” in the tradition of Phil Donahue’s successful talk show that was titled with his last name. Producers refused this request and television show was given the title Dr. Laura. Schlessinger has characterized her radio show as a “moral health program” rather than an “advice program” which has allowed her to avoid continued criticism for giving psychological advice. Although critics have called her approach to callers shrewish and scolding, others see it as frank and blunt.
Her background is very dysfunctional even by her own admitting, which has always led people to say she is unfit to give advice based on family values. She explained that she had not mourned the deaths of either of her parents because she had no emotional bond to them. She described her father as “petty, insensitive, mean, thoughtless, demeaning and downright unloving”. Her mother, she said, had “pathological pride”, “was never grateful and would always find something to criticize,” and “constantly expressed disdain for men, sex and love”. She credited her father with being charming, with giving her the drive to succeed.
However her life has been full of controversy her whole career before falling in love with the N word she was falling in love with married men and her own ideas. (more…)
