Filed under: Playahata General — FYI @ 10:29 am

COVINA, Calif. - Phony “ghetto” names were printed under a yearbook photo of Black Student Union members at a suburban Los Angeles high school, leaving some angry students and parents calling for an apology and a reprint.

“Tay Tay Shaniqua,” “Crisphy Nanos” and “Laquan White” were among the nine names placed next to the club’s photo in Charter Oak High School’s yearbook, Charter Oak Unified School District Superintendent Clint Harwick said. read article

“A yearbook is very significant and something you always hold on to,” said Toi Jackson, whose daughter, Evanne, is a BSU member at the school in Covina. “When she shows it to her kids she will have to explain why she has the name Crisphy.”

Zimbabwe and the Question of Imperialism: A Discussion

Filed under: Playahata Features — FYI @ 8:21 am

The Americans and British rage against Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe, who ran solo, uncontested, in Friday’s elections. Two Black intellectuals of the Left, professors Gerald Horne and Horace Campbell, debate the current crisis in Zimbabwe. Prof. Horne: “Why is it that Zimbabwe gets so much focus and attention on this side of the Atlantic when the leader of Cameron named himself President for life and it barely registers a blip?” Prof Campbell: “Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF started out like they were Lumumba in the Congo. They ended up like Mubutu…killing hundreds, tens of thousands of people.”"

Rappers have morals too

Filed under: Playahata Hood News — FYI @ 10:33 am

kanyepdiddy50.jpg

We have to remember sometimes it’s just music when an artist speaks about “Groupie Love”.Not all rappers are as promiscuous as P-Diddy is.Then again a artist like Curtis Jackson, knows what to say despite what critics say about him. In recent interview he tells Vibe “many love the fact that prostitution in legal in Amsterdam” ,I am not remotely interested. “Amsterdam is fun for some people, but I don’t want no [bleep] that costs $50. There’s too many people that got $50,” he exclaimed.

“I’ve been in hotel rooms, and girls were already there in the closet - naked,”‘ Fiddy added that he never partakes: “Hell, no! Are you kidding me?”

Now Hollywood loves drunk Superhero’s & so does America

Filed under: Playahata General — FYI @ 9:34 am

Papi post: Hancock ads looked pretty generic and forgettable initially but have now been cleaned up.However I will bet a 1 week check that the drunk superhero Hancock kills  the competition at the box office, he looks to even outdo the other drunk superhero that was a box office superstar. That Iron Man film that  has made over  1/2 billion world wide. How will hollywood handle  Hancock? Is he just a drunk in the movie to show he is a poor role model, or is his alcoholism creating his self destruction which he must come back from.Ironman I never showed why Tony Starks is an alcoholic. I have not seen film yet but a word of  Warning we better treat ALCOHOLISM seriously..take it from an “expert”.

Omar Tyree Retires from Urban Lit

Filed under: Playahata Announcements — FYI @ 9:53 am

omar-tyree.jpg

For the record, I never called my work “street literature” and I
never will. When I began to publish ground breaking contemporary
novels with Flyy Girl in 1993, and Capital City in 1994, I called
them “urban classics.” They were “urban” because they dealt with
people of color in the inner-city or “urban” population areas. They
were “classics” because I considered myself one of the first to start
the work of a new era. But now, after sixteen years and sixteen
novels in the African-American adult urban fiction game, I feel like
the man who created the monster Frankenstein. Things have gotten way out of hand. So it’s now time to put up my pen and move on to
something new, until the readership is ready to develop a liking for
fresh material on other subjects. (more…)

The Loud Silence of Feminists By Mary C. Curtis
The campaign against Michelle Obama — who went on “The View” this week to prove her everywoman bona fides — has not caused a rift between black and white women so much as it has exposed it.- A17
Michelle Obama has become an issue in the presidential campaign even though she isn’t running for anything. An educated, successful lawyer, devoted wife and caring mother has been labeled “angry” and unpatriotic and snidely referred to as Barack Obama’s “baby mama.”
Democrats, Republicans, independents, everyone should be offended.
And this black woman is wondering: Where are Obama’s feminist defenders? read more

Lil Wayne The Carter III by Ooh Papi

Count Lil Wayne as having sold the most units of an album in a week for this year at 1,005,545 (Platinum) and also count he and his label UNCM for PAYOLA as he dropped 69% the next week and sold 308,505. A very telling indicator that the word of mouth about how good the album is, was not strong and for more direct understanding of what I am saying “his peeps brought most of the albums first week to generate buzz for more sales” but its ok , most all of the labels are doing that these days. However a 69% drop the second week is a sure sign for those that study the music industry and trends that this is payola album not a classic album.

I was surprised I liked the album, even an older generation hip hop head like me appreciates

Ralph Nader says Obama talks “white” on issues

Barack Obama dismissed Ralph Nader’s claim that the Democratic candidate is trying to “talk white” and has failed to challenge the power structure to appeal to “white guilt.”Obama told reporters on Wednesday that Nader, who has run for president several times, including 2000 and 2004, was trying to get attention with “an inflammatory statement.”

“I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jesse Jackson?”

Crime Doesn’t Pay: “Jacob the Jeweler” 2.5 Years

Filed under: Playahata Hood News — The Underground @ 2:08 pm

Jacob The New York businessman known in the hip-hop world as “Jacob the Jeweler” was sentenced Tuesday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for lying to investigators looking into a multistate drug ring. Jacob Arabov, 43, pleaded guilty in October to falsifying records and giving false statements as part of a deal with federal prosecutors, who asked U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn to impose a minimum sentence of three years and one month. But Cohn decided to shave off seven months from that recommendation, citing Arabov’s extensive charity work.

Cohn also ordered the Russian immigrant to pay a $50,000 fine and to make a $2 million forfeiture payment to the government. “I feel ashamed that I broke the laws of this country, a country that has been so good for me,” Arabov said. “I will carry this shame for the rest of my life.” Arabov was arrested in 2006 at his Manhattan jewelry shop. Authorities accused him and others of conspiring to launder about $270 million in drug profits. Prosecutors dropped the money laundering charges in the plea deal. (more…)
