Description of a Terrorrist

by Morpheus

This weekend I heard and saw enought anti-Mid East sentiments to know that this war on terrorism (like the war on drugs) is going to greatly affect certain people much more than others.

Everyone from Bangladeshis to Sikhs to Christian Lebanese have been attacked, though they have nothing at all to do with terrorism or even fundamentalist Islam. Sikhs are from India. But because they wear turbans, and the American masses are just atrocious when it comes to geography and culture, they are mistaken for Arabs. There were cases of even Greeks and Latinos being attacked because they looked "foreign."

Everywhere I turn, I hear people making disparaging remarks about Pakistanis and Saudis who work around me, blissfully ignorant of the fact that the Saudis are allies of the US (in fact, it is because of this that bin Laden is on the rampage to begin with) and that Pakistan is where the US is basing any operation they may take. The masses don't seem to know the enemy from the allies.

I found that many common Americans had no idea where Afghanistan was. They placed it anywhere from Arabia to Africa. But in actuality, Afghanistan is on the edges of western and entering into Central Asia.

There was also the idea as said before that Afghanistan orchestrated the attack, when the real culprit being sought out is a Saudi dissident named Osama bin Laden who has no real ties to Afghanistan and certainly (as far as US intelligence is telling us so far) does not work for them, but he has given them money to turn a blind eye to his dealings. Thus I've heard alot of anti-Arabism towards Afghanistan.

But Afghans are not Arabs. They are Middle Eastern in terms of pre-dominant religion, spiritual culture, etc. But they are actually Central Asians much more closely related to people from Iran or the Northern parts of the Indian subcontinent ---racially speaking. They don't even speak Arabic.

And this brings up an interesting point which came to me as I watched Vice President Dick Cheney speak on the group they think is responsible for the attack. As most are already aware, Osama bin Laden does not claim responsibility for the attack. He says that those who did it were acting personally. The administration doesn't agree with this, and instead connect bin Laden to the attack financially and politically. Their idea is that bin Laden helped put together an extremist cabal called Al-Quida (meaning jihad, holy war, itself). This group was formed by veterans of the Afghan-Soviet war. It again sharply ties the US and CIA to bin Laden in a shadowy past where they channeled some $5 billion dollars into Afghan troops such as these to fight Russia and 'Communism'.

Following the war, for various reasons, bin Laden forms Al-Quida (sp) and shifts their focus from the Soviets to the West---particularly their old allies, the US. He draws radical Muslims, as any fanatic does, to his cause--often preying on the disfranchised, poor, etc. They flock from across Western Asia, but perhaps even East Africa and further within Asia and parts of Europe. These cells then receive funding from bin Laden in the form of a type of grant, but operate beyond his sphere of direct control. So in fact, the orchestrators of the bombing could indeed have been acting without a verbal consent from bin Laden---but with his money. It could be (don't know of course) that he had no idea they were planning to do what they did, but through his grants to the "faithful" helped fund the attack.

The dangerous thing about these cells is that its believed they work as "lone gunmen", receiving money for acts the Al-Quida itself is not even privy to. In this sense, the organization is near acephalous. This poses serious problems for such a war on terrorism. How do you fight an acephalous organization?

This was faced in the Timothy McVeigh case. No militia could really be found to pin it on. What you had in McVeigh's scenario was an individual striking out on his own to inflict an act of terrorism. The same is found in white supremacy groups of modern day, where random individuals (through preachings from a group) go out and commit their own acts of violence without any *direct* orders from the head group. Al-Quida also went beyond their training camps in Afghanistan.

Wherever there were Muslims waging a war in the world, they were sent: Sudan, Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia, the Phillippines, Chechnya, Bosnia, Turkey, Somalia, Sri Lanka, etc. What's more alarming is that they no doubt picked up converts wherever they went. In the case of the bombings of the US embassies in Africa for instance, one of the perpetrators was an East African while another was Egyptian.

I heard a white news commentator make the disturbing remark that he could tell security on the Canadian border with the US was lax because they had hardly checked him recently, and he was swarthy. He was referring to the fact that his sun tan could have made him look Middle Eastern, obviously saying that Mid Eastern peoples fit the profile of the average Islamic jihadic terrorist.

And, as biased as that sounds, he may be right as no doubt most of Al-Quiada seems to be Mid Eastern. But there are cracks in that security net. With Al-Quiada's world involvement and converts, who's to say *all* their members look like Middle Eastern peoples? They could look East Indian, or black African or Asian (as in Mongoloid Asian). Indonesia for instance has the largest Muslim population in the world. None of them look remotely Middle Eastern. And yes, they could even look like a blonde/red haired Eastern European Turk or Bosnian, or a blue eyed Chechyan. Focus *solely* upon Middle Eastern peoples could be a big mistake, especially if such a group knows that's who's being sought out.

Note: I'm not saying all this to cause any panic or hysteria, with folks thinking any Muslim could be a member of a terrorist group. But rather in fact I'm pointing out how difficult this road the US has taken is going to be. And especially putting some perspective on this idea that all fanatic jihadic terrorists are Middle Eastern.
